Bridal jewellery decides two things in the makeup: the metal sets the palette's warmth, and the pieces set placement — because a borla, a matha patti, a nath, an aad or heavy earrings frame, cover or touch parts of the face. The outfit's colour and the jewellery's metal are read together at the trial; the pairing rules for the outfit colours are in Makeup for a Red Lehenga, Makeup for a Green Lehenga, Makeup for a Pastel Lehenga and the other colour guides; this page is the jewellery.
The metal sets the temperature
| Metal / setting | Pulls the palette | Eye | Highlight | Blush | Lip |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow gold, kundan, meenakari, jadau | Warm | Gold, copper, bronze, warm brown; kajal; brown or black wing | Gold, champagne | Peach, warm rose, brick | Warm red, brick, wine, brown-rose |
| Antique / oxidised gold | Warm-muted | Bronze, warm taupe, deep brown | Champagne | Warm rose | Brick, brown-rose, wine |
| Rose gold | Warm-pink | Rose-gold, champagne, warm taupe | Rose-gold | Peach-rose | Rose, mauve, soft red |
| Polki in gold | Warm-neutral | Bronze, gold; a neutral bronze bridges | Champagne | Rose | Red, wine, berry |
| Polki / diamonds in white metal, platinum | Cool-neutral | Taupe, pewter, cool bronze, plum accent | Champagne, pearl | Rose, cool rose | Blue-red, plum, mauve, berry |
| Silver, oxidised silver | Cool | Taupe, grey-brown, charcoal; silver accent | Pearl, champagne | Cool rose | Blue-red, plum, berry, mauve |
| Pearls | Soft-cool | Champagne, taupe, soft brown | Pearl | Rose | Rose, soft red |
| Mixed (gold and white metal together) | Neutral | Neutral bronze or taupe-bronze | Champagne | Rose | Follows the outfit |
The base is never shifted for the metal — it is matched to the skin — but the bronzer, the highlight and the temperature of the eye and lip follow the jewellery.
The stones are referenced, not matched
- Emeralds: copper and gold on the eye; a wine, berry or brick lip; never a green lid.
- Rubies and red stones: a matched red or wine lip; gold-bronze eye.
- Sapphires and blue stones: taupe eye, a navy liner at most; a blue-red or plum lip.
- Pink stones (tourmaline, pink sapphire): rose-gold eye; a rose or berry lip; not pink on pink.
- Pearls: rose and champagne; a classic red for contrast.
- Enamel (meenakari) in many colours: the palette follows the gold, and one enamel colour may appear once, in the liner or the lip.

The pieces set placement
| Piece | Where it sits | What the makeup does |
|---|---|---|
| Maang tikka (pendant) | Centre forehead at the hairline | Lengthens the face; the brow's centre and the parting kept clean; a matte forehead — a wet highlight beside a tikka reads as a hot spot |
| Matha patti / sheeshphool | Across the forehead and hairline | Widens the forehead; brows must read beneath it — filled and lifted; the hairline powdered where the chain sits |
| Borla / rakhdi | A dome at the centre parting | Frames the brow; the eye and brow carry the look from beneath it — kajal, wing, sculpted brows |
| Passa / jhoomar | At the side of the head | Balances an asymmetric part; the outer eye on that side defined |
| Nath (nose ring) | On the nostril, often with a chain to the hair | Crosses the cheek — that cheek set with powder; the lip finished before the nath goes on; the nose contour minimal (the nath draws the eye) |
| Earrings (heavy jhumkas, chandbalis) | Touching the jaw | The jaw set; a check for transfer after they go on; long drops lengthen, wide studs widen |
| Aad / choker / collar necklace | Covering the neck and upper chest | The base matched on the skin between it and the jaw — the only skin the camera sees there; the neck blended down to it |
| Long haar / rani haar | Down the chest | The chest blended and matched; a satin, not glossy, finish |
| Bajuband, haath phool, kaleere, chooda | Arms and hands | Hands and arms moisturised and matched; no shimmer body lotion that catches flash |
| Kamarbandh | Waist | — |
| Bindi | Centre forehead between the brows | Placed on set skin after the spray; sized and shaped to the tikka above it |
Order on the morning
Makeup complete and set; then earrings, necklace, tikka or matha patti or borla, the dupatta over them, and the nath last, after the lip; the face checked with everything on and photographed. The sequence is in Bridal Hair and Makeup Coordination; the Rajputi set in the Royal Rajputi Bridal Look.
Light and reflection
Gold, kundan and mirror work throw warm light onto the face; diamonds and polki throw white points. Beside either, a satin highlight reads as skin and a wet one as sweat; the base must be exact because the jewellery gives the camera a reference. Under flash, a heavy silica powder beside diamonds doubles the sparkle in the wrong place. Light behaviour in How Lighting Changes Makeup Appearance.
What to bring to the trial
The jewellery itself, or clear photographs in daylight — the metal, the stones, and every piece that touches the face (tikka, nath, earrings, choker) — because the warmth of the palette and the placement of the structure are decided against them. See What to Bring to Your Bridal Makeup Appointment.
From Chhaya Yadav's experience
Observations from bridal work in Jaipur — professional observations, not statistics.
- Gold and kundan are what most of my brides wear, and the palette is warm because of it — the cool taupes stay in the drawer.
- The base is matched between the aad and the jaw; with a broad choker, that strip is the whole neck the camera sees.
- The nath goes on after the lip, and I check that cheek — it is the piece that touches the makeup all day.
- A wet highlight beside kundan is a hot spot in every flash — satin, always.
Frequently asked questions
Does jewellery really change the makeup? In two ways. The metal sets the palette's temperature: gold, kundan and meenakari pull the eye toward bronze, copper and gold and the lip toward warm reds and brick; diamonds, polki set in white metal, silver and pearls allow a cooler taupe, plum, mauve and blue-red. And the pieces set placement, because a borla or matha patti, a nath, an aad or heavy earrings cover or frame parts of the face the makeup must work around.
What suits gold and kundan? Warmth: a gold or copper lid with a bronze crease, kajal, a warm brown or black wing, a gold or champagne highlight, a peach or warm-rose blush, and a lip in warm red, brick, wine or brown-rose. Cool taupes and icy highlights read grey beside gold.
What suits diamonds, polki and silver? A cooler or neutral palette: taupe, pewter or a cool bronze on the eye, a champagne or pearl highlight, a rose blush, and a blue-red, plum, mauve or berry lip. Warm orange-bronze and copper can fight white metal; a neutral bronze bridges it if the outfit is warm.
What about coloured stones? The stone is referenced, not matched: emeralds with gold take copper on the eye and a wine or berry lip; rubies take a matched red lip and a gold eye; sapphires take a taupe eye and a blue-red or plum lip; pearls take rose and champagne. The stone's colour appears once — in the lip or a liner — never as a matching lid.
Key takeaways
- The metal sets the temperature: gold and kundan warm; diamonds, polki and silver cooler; the base never moves, the bronzer, highlight, eye and lip do.
- Stones are referenced once, in the lip or a liner — never matched on the lid.
- The pieces set placement: tikka and matha patti frame the brow, the nath crosses the cheek, the aad hides the neck, earrings touch the jaw.
- Makeup first, pieces after, nath last; satin highlight beside anything that reflects; bring the jewellery to the trial.
