Bridal Eye Makeup Guide: the looks, what suits which eye, and what lasts through the pheras

A bridal eye is built for three things at once: the eye shape it sits on, the metal of the jewellery beside it, and the hours and tears ahead of it. The look a bride saves from a screen answers none of the three. This guide sets out the looks brides ask for, which suits which eye and function, the lash choice, and the products that survive the pheras.

By eye shape

• Almond: almost every look; the traditional wing is made for it.
• Round: lengthen — outer-half emphasis, extended wing, halo works; no dark line all round.
• Hooded (common): the sculpt above the fold, a raised gel wing drawn with the eye open, matte lid, shimmer at the inner corner only, clusters on the outer third; cut creases are lost.
• Monolid: a gradient from the lashes up, thicker liner, wing outward; fine-band lashes with curl.
• Downturned: wing up, nothing on the lower line, lashes at the outer third.
• Deep-set: light lid, thin liner close to the lashes, matte highlight.
• Small eyes: light lid, outer-half definition, individual lashes; no heavy strip.

Matching the jewellery

One metal on the lid, matte around it. Gold, polki and kundan take gold, copper and bronze; diamonds and silver take champagne, taupe and silver; pearls take champagne and rose. Two metals on one eye compete with the jewellery instead of echoing it.

Lashes

Clusters on the outer two-thirds are the bridal default at our studio — they lift, photograph as the bride's own and suit hooded and small eyes; a fine-band strip for more drama at the sangeet; individuals for a natural mehendi. What survives tears, heat and a ghoonghat

Primed and set lid; gel or liquid liner; waterproof mascara; kajal in the waterline set with a dark powder shadow pressed over it; powder shadow over any cream; a fixing spray; brow gel. And the rule for tears: a cotton bud dabbed under the eye, never a wipe. The touch-up kit carries a cotton bud, the kajal and a small angled brush with concealer for the one wing that needs a five-second repair.

Function by function

Mehendi: natural, brown liner, individuals. Haldi: barely there, waterproof mascara. Sangeet: smoky, halo or cut crease with a strip. Wedding: traditional kohl and wing with the jewellery's metal. Common mistakes

• A look chosen from a screen for a different eye shape.
• Cut crease or in-fold shadow on a hooded eye — gone when the eye opens.
• Two metals, or shimmer everywhere.
• Heavy strips on small or hooded eyes.
• Pencil liner on the lid for a long function — transferred by the pheras.
• Wiping tears.

• The traditional kohl-and-wing eye with the jewellery's gold is the look most of my brides end up with, and on hooded eyes it is drawn open, higher, in gel — or it is gone before the varmala.
• Clusters on the outer third replaced full strips in my kit years ago; the eye lifts instead of closing.
• Kajal set with powder is the difference between a waterline that lasts and one that is on the cheek by noon in June.
• The cotton bud for tears is the smallest item in the kit and the most used at the vidaai.
